New South Dallas Community Center Opens with Youth Programs
DALLAS — The newly constructed Cedars Community Center officially opened its doors Monday morning on South Lamar Street, bringing much-needed youth programming and community resources to the rapidly developing South Dallas neighborhood.
The $2.8 million facility, located at 1425 South Lamar Street near the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, features a gymnasium, computer lab, art studio, and multipurpose rooms designed to serve families in the Cedars, Deep Ellum, and surrounding areas. The center will operate Monday through Saturday, offering after-school programs, job training workshops, and recreational activities for residents of all ages.
"This community center represents hope and opportunity for our young people," said Maria Rodriguez, the center's executive director and longtime South Dallas resident. "We've seen too many kids with nowhere to go after school. Now they have a safe space to learn, grow, and develop their talents."
The facility's grand opening celebration drew over 200 community members, including Dallas City Council representatives and local business owners who have pledged ongoing support. The center's youth programs will include basketball leagues, computer coding classes, art workshops, and homework assistance for students from nearby schools.
Local entrepreneur James Mitchell, owner of Faith Auto Glass Dallas, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony and announced his company's commitment to sponsor the center's job readiness program. "We believe in investing in our community's future workforce," Mitchell said. "These programs will help young adults develop the skills they need to succeed in today's economy."
The Cedars neighborhood has experienced significant growth in recent years, with new residential developments and businesses moving into the area between Interstate 30 and the Trinity River. However, community leaders have emphasized the importance of ensuring longtime residents benefit from the area's revitalization.
The community center was funded through a combination of city bonds, federal grants, and private donations. Construction began in early 2023, with the project facing brief delays due to supply chain issues but ultimately finishing on schedule.
Programming at the center will begin next week, with registration now open for after-school activities and adult education classes. The facility will also serve as a polling location for upcoming elections and will host community meetings for various neighborhood associations.
Center officials expect to serve approximately 500 families in its first year of operation. The facility includes a commercial kitchen that will provide meals for youth programs and can be rented for community events.
The Cedars Community Center is open Monday through Friday from 3 PM to 9 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 6 PM. Registration information and program schedules are available at the front desk or by calling 214-555-0147.
